Mallorca
Mallorca is one of
Europe's most popular holiday destinations. The island has so much
to offer, magnificent scenery, friendly people, fine cuisine,
interesting history, traditions and architecture and, of course it
has to be mentioned, some of the most beautiful beaches and coves in
the Mediterranean
There is the beach paradise of 'Es Trenc' in the Southeast, the
spectacular scenery around 'Cap Formentor' in the North and the
charm of the rural landscape as you travel around the island.
The small towns of Valdemossa
and Deya (Deia) in the West, approached by driving along the
spectacular coastline, are very popular with visitors and artists.
The Tramuntana's beauty has
dazzled numerous poets and artists, among them Robert Graves, Chopin
and the archduke Luis Salvador of Austria.
The Northern area is has
mountainous scenery and the sweeping bays of Puerto Pollensa and
Alcudia. |

Trips
The island’s
entertainment facilities, which can be found close by hotels and
apartments in almost all the island’s resorts, offer variety and
something unique to each for you to enjoy your holiday to the full.
Travel agencies organize day-long excursions to the Drach Caves and
Artà, amongst other places, or else the Roman remains of Pollentia
in Alcúdia, the beach of Formentor, the Carthusian Monastery at
Valldemossa, the Port of Cala Figuera and the islands of Dragonera
and Cabrera. However, if you prefer not to go so far, you can while
away the hours walking around the surrounding areas and going on
country walks.
Other alternatives include aquatic parks, a drive-in safari park, a
dolphinarium, exotic birds, historic gardens or areas open to
visitors such as the natural park, the “Albufera”, in Muro. As
regards nightlife, we must dedicate a separate chapter to it. There
are streets lined with bars and pubs, offering tempting drinks and
the latest music, as well as the 180 discos which can be found in
the tourist areas of Palma and Mallorca, all guaranteeing good fun
and high spirits right into the early hours of the morning.
For those who like gambling, the Casino (situated some 20 km from
Palma) offers you gaming tables and machines. Whether you win or
lose, the night club just alongside offers a show of international
standards, as do other places around the island. Just remember, you
can do anything except get bored! |
Gastronomy
Bearing in mind
Mallorca’s location in the midst of the Mediterranean, it is no
surprise that our cuisine is based on the Mediterranean diet which
is today so highly praised. Logically, the islanders eat the produce
that they grow, and the island’s most important produce consists of
fruit and vegetables and livestock such as pigs, suckling pigs and
lamb. During the hunting season, there is also game such as rabbits
and partridges, not to mention the enormous variety of rock fish and
other seafood available.
There are some 1,200 restaurants in Mallorca offering cuisine of all
possible types. Nevertheless, many of them specialize in typical
Mallorcan cuisine with dishes such as “tumbet”, “frit”, rabbit in
onions, roast suckling pig, shoulder of lamb or fish like fried red
mullet, boiled scorpion fish, or toothed bream Mallorcan style.
We must not forget the island’s stuffed meats such as the famous
“sobrasada” and the “botifarrones”, made when a pig is slaughtered.
Of the desserts and pastries of Arab and Jewish origin, we still
have “crespells” and “robiols”, whilst the “crème de la crème” of
Mallorcan cakes is the “ensaimada”.
Mallorcan wines went through a period of enormous popularity during
the last century, but many of the vines were ruined by phylloxera.
At present the island’s wine-production is once again regaining its
former success and highly-praised red and white quality wines are
being produced. Binissalem, Petra, Porreras and Consell produce
wines with a guarantee of origin. |

The secret
beaches
The
island has over 230 km of aqua-blue coastline backed by long white
sandy beaches, pretty coves and rocky headland. We've picked out our
favourite beaches from across the island, which we think offer
something a little different and are away from the tourist resorts.
Cala Mondrago
|
Cala Mondrago has two sandy coves with brilliant crystal
clear water. Park your car at the first smaller cove and
walk round the corner to the second. It's larger, backed
by sand dunes and has a small beach bar for
refreshments.
Directions: Drive to Santanyi and
follow signs to the Parc Natural Mondrago and then Cala
Mondrago
|
|
Es Trenc |
|
Es Trenc is over 5km of white sandy beach backed by sand
dunes. The water is turquoise and the beach has a real
Caribbean feel. It does get busy in peak season with all
the locals.
Directions: Drive through
Campos following signs
to Santanyi. Immediately after leaving Campos there is
sign on your right to Es Trenc.
|
|
Platja Muro |
|
Platja Muro is a long stretch of sandy beach just south
of the busy resort of Alcudia. The beach is backed by
the odd hotel but there's usually plenty of space to
spread out and watch the kite surfers.
Directions: Drive south along
Alcudia bay and the best place to stop is soon after the
turning for the S'Albufera Parc Natural.
|
|
Cala de Deia |
|
Cala de Deia is our pick of the beaches in the
Northwest. It's a pebble beach with beautiful clear
water and great beach bar sitting on the rocks looking
out to sea.
Directions: Drive
through Deia in the
direction of Soller. After leaving Deia, watch out for a
small turning on the left just past the Olivo
Restaurant.
|
|
Es Dolc |
|
Es Dolc is an easy walk from the laid back resort of
Colonial Sant Jordi. Turquoise waters, white sand backed
by dunes and a relaxed atmosphere. Keep walking round
the coast to other great unspoilt beaches.
Directions: Drive into Colontial
Sant Jordi and you'll soon see a left turning for the
Port. Park here and the beach is about a 10 minute walk
round the coast.

|
Cala Torta, Estreta,
Mitjana |
|
These three beaches are quite remote so be prepared for
a bumpy ride through a small mountain range. They are
some of the most natural beaches on the island and if
you head for Cala Torta, there's a small beach bar open
in peak season.
Directions: Drive out of Arta on
the road to Capdepera and the beaches are signed on a
small road on the left.
